Sold for US$ 3,600 inc. premium

Ink drawing on back.

A Jerry Garcia original ink drawing on the back of a Grateful Dead fan club admission form, 1967
Rendered in blue felt-tip ink on the verso of a form while at 710 Ashbury Street, image shows a fantastical building that could possibly be Jerry's vision of 710 Ashbury itself; front of piece is signed in black felt-tip ink in Garcia's hand "To Muckerfutch," a name he made-up for "Spidey" [aka Gary Fisher], the recipient of the sketch. (Another one of these admission forms from Rock Scully's collection is being sold in LOT 158.)
11 x 8in

Footnotes

  • Gary Fisher [aka "Spidey"] was an employee at the Fillmore in the 1960s where he ran the light shows and later went on to fame as a mountain bike innovator. He received this artwork directly from Jerry Garcia in 1967 when he was hanging out at 710 Ashbury at what was called the "art table" in the kitchen. The Grateful Dead had recently released their first album and Fisher was mentioning how it was a "groovy record." Garcia, in jest, took on a rock star persona and started doodling on the back of a Grateful Dead fan club mailer, handing it to Spidey like it was a sacred scroll. Evidently, Spidey did consider it important as he saved it, later gifting it to Pig Pen's brother's friend.
