There are few manufactures of early day motorcycles more respected than Federation National (FN). Prior to the Second World War this Belgian conglomerate produced motorcars, and in 1959 one of their formidable motocross machines took Rene Baeten to the 500cc World Championship! The firm continue as makers of ordnance to the present day. FN arguably pioneered 4-cylinder machines with the introduction of a 362cc model in 1904. Their unit construction singles, which used a similar twin down-tube frame, and leading link forks, are equally revered. Another fine feature found on all early FNs is the trademark fuel tank, constructed from sheet brass. Until the mid-Twenties, typically, by when it was considered too costly, every FN produced incorporated shaft-drive transmission. The FN was discovered in Belgium circa 1970 by Dr Helmut Krackowizer - widely renowned as writer, enthusiast, and historian - who sadly died in 2001. After its acquisition by the Museum in 1986 a full restoration was later completed at Workshop Rossi in Vienna. Prof Ehn states the machine "is absolutely original" and "the engine revs up with good compression". In a further note on file he confirms that the lighting system is in good condition. The machine is usefully equipped for 1909, given the inclusion of a front lamp, tool pouch, front and rear centre stands, plus a parcel-friendly sub-frame at rear.
