c.1950 Vincent 998cc Rapide Racing Motorcycle
Frame no. RC/1/5445
Engine no. F10AB/1/2125
Courageous individuals have been racing the mighty Vincent twin ever since factory tester George Brown and his brother Cliff created the famous Rapide ‘Gunga Din’ in the late 1940s. Following Rollie Free’s capture of the ‘world’s fastest production motorcycle’ record in 1948 on a tuned Series-B Black Shadow, the factory itself got officially involved, marketing a racer of similar specification to Free’s machine - the Series-C Black Lightning. Despite the age of the design and the value of individual machines, Vincents are regularly seen in classic racing today all over the world and can even hold their own when pitted against more modern machinery. Indeed, at this year’s Daytona 200 an Australian-built Irving Vincent won the second AHRMA Battle of the Twins race, beating a field of Ducatis, BMWs and Moto Guzzis. Its engine stripped, checked and prepared, this Rapide racer features matching crankcase halves, Carillo con-rods, new crankshaft bearings and oil pump, belt primary drive, Mikuni carburettors and magneto ignition. The original fuel tank is retained while the twin finned brakes front and rear feature vented alloy plates. An original large-type rev counter is fitted also and the alloy wheel rims are shod with racing tyres. Last used at the Salzburgring in 2007, this machine is described as ‘very fast’.
