Footnotes

  • This bronze bust, from an edition of twelve, portrays the eminent Australian artist Lloyd Rees (1895-1988). Tribe met Rees through the New South Wales Society of Artists, where she regularly exhibited in the 1930s; and they remained friends until his death in 1988. When they were both in England in 1966 Rees arranged to visit her studio to sit for his portrait head. He subsequently returned to Sydney with the original terracotta bust where it was exhibited at the Macquarie Galleries in June 1967.

Lloyd Rees was a landscape painter, lithographer, writer and teacher, held in high regard in Australia. He travelled extensively in Europe and for a number of years taught at the University of Sydney. In 1969-70 his work was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and touring to all the state galleries. He continued painting well into his eighties and his work is widely held in public collections throughout Australia.

Tribe’s portrait head was cast in bronze by the Meridian foundry, Melbourne. There is a bronze cast in the Art Gallery of New South Wales (purchased in 1981) and another was bequeathed by the artist to the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, New South Wales. The original earthenware head in terracotta is on long term loan from the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, to the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.
