Footnotes
LITERATURE:- McDonald, Patricia R., Barbara Tribe, Sculptor (Sydney: Craftsman House 2000) pp.15, 67-8, 156, (illustrated in colour on the cover and Plate 1, p. 76).
In the early 1930s Tribe created a number of works inspired by classical themes and mythology: - Medusa, 1931, Fountain of Life, 1932, The Spirit of the Sea, 1933 and Bacchanalia, 1934. Medusa depicts one of the Gorgons, the three terrifying sisters from Greek mythology so hideous that whoever beheld them turned instantly to stone.
It was during these early student years when, in 1932, Tribe, still only nineteen, entered a competition to design the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) float for the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening celebrations. She was the winner and spent several months producing an elaborate wooden structure depicting the three armed forces, surmounted by a figure of the Goddess of Victory.
Medusa was cast in an edition of twelve by the founder Alan Crawford, Sydney. In 1995 on a visit to Sydney, Tribe presented a cast to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
