Fantastic Ruby and 18K Gold Box—“The Crab”
By Manfred Wild
Idar-Oberstein, Germany

A work of sheer opulence and expression of the lapidary artists’s imagination. The body of the crab is formed of a massive ruby, weighing approximately 3020 carats. Two cabochon sapphires, together weighing approximately 0.30 carats, form the eyes which when pressed, open the hinged lid of the box to reveal a smooth polished interior in which the distinct hexagonal structure of the ruby crystal is visible. The articulated claws (there are actually springs inside which assist them in opening and closing!) are formed of 18K yellow gold and pavé-set with 257 brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 4.25 carats, mounted in 18K yellow gold. The eight legs have movable articulations to assist in adjusting the position of the crab. The compostion is raised on an oval plinth base carved of gray-black Russian obsidian, length 10 in, mounted with three fossil pectin shells, signed M. Wild.
