Magnificent Isotelus maximus
Isotelus maximus
Ordovician
Ohio

Arguably one of the finest large examples of Isotelus maximus yet found, this extraordinary trilobite specimen is the third largest of its species to have been discovered; the two larger specimens are currently in museums. The near-pristine condition of the delicate shell is noteworthy, and the caramel-colored exoskeleton contrasts beautifully with the classic gray matrix. Not only has Isotelus maximus garnered the unique distinction of being declared the Official State Fossil of Ohio, to many ardent collectors it has also become the quintessential American trilobite. The present example ranks among the world’s very finest Isotelus maximus specimens; it is superior to most specimens of its kind housed in major institutions today.
This specimen was found and prepared by Thomas T. Johnson, whose discoveries have been published by National Geographic and Audubon magazines. Several hundred of his specimens are on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. He has authored two books on trilobites. Measures 14 3/4in (straight line measurement)
