Stone Meteorite Sphere from the Sahara Desert—Internal Structure of the NWA 869 Stone Meteorite Revealed
L4-6, fragmental breccia
Sahara Desert, Algeria

Meteorites are typically named after the nearest city, county or geological feature. When there are no such landmarks, such as in the middle of massive desert, meteorites are numbered. This is an example of NWA 869—the 869th meteorite classified following its recovery in the Northwest African grid of the Sahara Desert. Thousands of NWA 869 specimens weighing hundreds of kilograms have been recovered by Berbers, which makes NWA 869 the largest meteorite shower known to have occurred in the Sahara. Given the relatively large amount of 869, and the fact that it is a common chondrite, some of these meteorites were fashioned into spheres—something which would never occur if the amount of material were limited. The price of such spheres is relatively high as a result of the amount of material lost in the grinding and fashioning processes. A beautiful variegated matrix covering hues ranging from cream to chocolate is plainly evident, and a dappling of metalflake is seen throughout. 77mm in diameter (3.0 inches) and 737.5 grams (1.6 pounds).
