NWA (869) Slice
Stony, ordinary chondrite (L5), regolith breccia
Northwest Africa

Discovered circa 2001, many thousands of (mostly small) specimens of this special stone have been found. This slice was cut from an 80-pound individual, one of the very largest pieces recovered from this strewn field. This meteorite has turned out to be extremely interesting scientifically. It is a breccia from the surface of its parent body. At this location, rocks were subject to direct impact effects, fragmentation, melting and mixing in of impacting materials. Careful inspection of this slice shows all of these features clearly. Many angular fragments of the original target material are seen, some darkened by impact shock, others not. Also visible are a few small (centimeter sized) blebs of impact melts and fragments of foreign material. It is these foreign material fragments that are most interesting. They represent fragments of some of the materials that were crashing into the parent asteroid in early solar system history. Weighs 930.6 grams
