Footnotes

  • On 26 February 1881, Major-General Sir George Pomeroy Colley and his troops occupied Manjuba Mountain, in an attempt to force the Boers into retreat. Instead, the Boers attacked from every side, resulting in the death of Colley, and the overwhelming defeat of the British. Colley's successor, General Wood, signed an armistice agreement on the 6 March 1881, followed by a peace agreement on the 23 March. On the 3 August the Pretoria Convention was signed to establish Tranvaal's independence, thus bringing the First Boer War to an end.
