Footnotes

  • A subject such as Mother and Child, depicted in this manner, brings to the surface all sorts of associations, for Western viewers at least. Critics have also drawn parallels with Russian social realist painting. But - as is often noted - Kayyali succeeds in retaining the subjects' individuality. This work possesses that strong hint of melancholy (as does The Lottery Boy, lot 44 in the present sale) which runs through Kayyali's paintings and which seems to prefigure his personal life and the circumstances of his death. Nevertheless Mother and Child has a tenderness appropriate to the scene which overrides these feelings.
