Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private UK collection: acquired directly from the artist.

The businessman, or stuffed shirt, was commonly treated by Souza as a figure of scorn. The suit represents a clothes-horse by which to attack metaphorically the establishment.

The jacket, tie and stiff collar
are signs of respectability (from Words and Lines)

By remoulding the magazine photo, Souza both defiantly defaces respectability (always a veneer, he would say) and reclaims the man by giving him a good thrashing with his paintbrush. The Head, now assaulted with colour, has been brought back to life, features rearranged but still sporting a funky tie of Indian paisley pattern.
