COCKS (WILLIAM PENNINGTON)
"Falmouth Fragments Collected by W.P. Cocks. 1843-4-5-6", manuscript in ink, on paper, approximately 200 pages, numerous pen, ink and watercolour illustrations, 3 autograph letters signed, contemporary quarter calf by J.H. & R.G. Lake booksellers and bookbinders of Falmouth, gilt lettered "Natural History of Falmouth" on spine, worn, 8vo, [1843-1846]

Footnotes

  • An album of drawings (many hand-coloured) and notes by Cocks, mostly relating to his interest in molluscs, anemones and other sea-side natural history, all gathered locally ("from trawl refuse", "from the stomach of the morrh", "strawberry actinia... ext. low water mark, spring tide, Gwyllyn Vase", "Thaumantias Octona... dredged in the harbour by Dr. Vigurs", etc.). Several of the specimens are depicted in glass cups, and the whole gives a vivid impression of Cocks' working methodology.

Includes three autograph letters signed to Cocks, by the zoologist Joshua Alder (1792-1867), best known as the co-author of On the British Nudibranchiate Mollusca, 1845-1855. The letters, dated between 1850 and 1852, mention a visit "to see the wonderful crystal palace... [in] the huge metropolis" but mostly concern natural specimens. Alder requests that Cocks sends samples ("Should you be able to send me one alive, be so good as avoid sending it on a Friday as if it arrives there on the Sunday it will have to lie an additional day in the post office"), discusses his studies, mentioning articles proposed for the Ray Society, and the Naturalist's Magazine. See illustration overleaf.
