  • A fine manuscript record of the natural history of Cornwall, compiled by William Pennington Cocks (1791-1878), long-time resident at Falmouth, and some-time correspondent of Darwin. The album is full of well-executed illustrations of locally collected natural history specimens, each with a note recording details, including Latin name, whereabouts found, rarity etc. Examples include: an otter "shot, Feb. 1850: sea-side of via duct, Swanpool", "Squaus glaucus, Linn. Caught with hook line, by one of Mr. Yeoman's boatmen, July 16, 1849, 5 miles south of Falmouth Harbour, Length 6ft, 4 inc."; "Cirratulus Medusa... under stone in a muddy soil, Gwyllyn Vase, June, 1844"; "Black rat. Mus rattus... Nat. size. Gass works, Falmouth, Oct. 1845".
