A Rare Formal Award Document Of A Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross Awarded to Oberfeldwebul Karl Hausmann
Hand scrivened on white Velum ‘Im Namen Des Deutschenvolkes Verleihe Ich Dem Oberfeldwebul Karl Hausmann Das Ritterkreuz Des Eisernen Kreuzes, Führerhauptquartier Den 15. Mai 1942 Des Führer und Oberst Befhlshaber Der Wehrmacht’, and with Hitler’s signature in blue ink, maroon coloured morocco leather binding imprinted on the front cover with a gilded Third Reich Eagle, the inside back binding signed by Frieda Thiersch.

The document covers are scuffed on the front and back corners, the spine with a small fracture near the top and the document retaining cord detached at one end. The document still crisp, one small dark stain on the second sheet.

Footnotes

  • Karl Hausmann was born 10.01.1912, becoming Feldwebul of the 3rd coy, 28th Jaeger Regiment winning his knights cross on the Eastern Front, later promoted to Oberleutenant. He died 27.07.1997.

This Document was bought back to the UK by Staff Sargeant Major William Edward Lincoln MBE, American Bronze Star. Lincoln was a senior member of the operational intelligence sub-division of G2 (S.H.A.E.F).

The award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross was instituted on 1 September 1939 and was Germany’s highest award for bravery. Due to the importance placed upon this award, a special team of artists were commissioned to create the documents. Under the overall charge of Professor Gerdy Troost, Franziska Kobell was the scrivener, Frieda Thiersch produced the binding, and Franz and Hermann Wandinger did the gilding. Until 1942 all Knight’s Cross recipients received this document, after this date however, the formal award document was discontinued and instead recipients received a smaller and less elaborate preliminary document. The most comprehensive list of Knight’s Cross winners is Fellgiebel’s ‘Die Trager des Ritterkreuzes des Eisernen Kreuzes 1939-1945’, wherein the rank and position of each recipient at the time of their award is listed.
