Lot 581
Ross Photoscope binocular camera

Sold for £ 16,800 (US$ 23,718) inc. premium
Ross Photoscope binocular camera
In the form of a field glass with removable objective lens and roll film holder for twenty four 3.5 x 4cm pictures in one tube and viewing lens, ground glass screen and magnifier in the other, each camera component numbered 6341 being interchangeable with standard binocular eyepieces and objectives. The binocular body numbered 6-5999. The objective and viewing lenses with between lens shutter replace the standard eyepiece unit with the focusing tubes. The camera must thus be focused and used with the eyepiece end towards the subject. The shutter is set by a wheel and released by a lever between the tubes. The camera is in excellent condition with maker's case labelled 'Ross & Co. 111 New Bond St. London' and with a more used matching pair of Ross binocular eyepieces and focusing tubes and unused film cartridge.

Footnotes

  • Note: Based on patents Nos. 8378 and 2725 taken out by William Sanders in 1889 and 1891 respectively and produced by Ross from 1892, this example has a shutter mechanism that is an improvement over the two shown in the patents which may not have actually been produced. Ross advertised the camera attachment to any of their binoculars for between £4-10s and £6 plus 5s extra for other maker's binoculars or the complete Ross cased outfit for 12 guineas (£12-12s.)

We have no record of any example of this very rare camera being previously offered for sale at auction, certainly in the UK.
