A 19th century Chinese export ivory chess set, Canton
One side stained red and the opposing side left natural, the Chinese versus the Mongols, the kings and queens as emperors and empresses, bishops as court mandarins, knights as horsemen with lances, the rooks as caparisoned elephants with mahouts and turrets bearing flags, the pawns as infantrymen with muskets on one side and swords and shields to the other, two knights lacking lances, two rooks lacking flags, king 13cm, pawn 4.5cm.
