A 19th century Canton export 'King George' chess set
One side stained green and the opposing side left natural, representing the Europeans versus the Chinese, the green side with king and queen as emperor and empress, the bishops as court mandarins holding switches, the knights as mounted soldiers and the rooks as caparisoned elephants bearing turrets and mahouts, the pawns as foot soldiers with spears, the European king and queen as King George III and Queen Charlotte, the bishops as Christian bishops, the knights as horsemen and the pawns as foot soldiers with swords and shields, all wearing phrygian caps, all on lotus carved circular bases, lacking one knight, s.d., king 11cm, pawn 55cm, with a 1920s chinoiserie letter tray.
