A 19th century Chinese ivory chess set
One side stained red and representing the Mongols, the opposing side in natural ivory and representing the Chinese, the kings and queens as emperors and empresses, the bishops as court mandarins, the knights as cavalrymen with swords and shields, the rooks as caparisoned elephants bearing mahouts and turrets with flags, the pawns as foot soldiers, one side with swords, the other with spears, all on oval bases, some pieces s.d., king 11cm, pawn 5.5cm, with a Chinese gilt board/box, circa 1900, 49.5cm long.
