Literature: H.E. Allen, Catalogue of his works, John Basford, published Derwent-Wye Fine Art 2007 p. 128, illustrated p. 69.
Harry Epworth Allen was born in Sheffield, Allen worked as a clerk in the steel works of Arthur Balfour, attending Sheffield School of Art in his spare time. During World War One he was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry. Allen was badly injured during the war, losing a leg, and on his return to Sheffield he worked as Balfours personal secretary until 1931. From this time he started to concentrate on his painting, joining the Yorkshire Group of Artists and exhibiting at the R.A. With a preference for tempera, Allen spent most of his time painting rural views of Derbyshire as well as spending some time painting in Ireland. In 19598 a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and in 1986 they held an exhibition of his decorative works. His work is held in numerous public collections in the U.K. Australia and New Zealand.
