Provenance: Purchased by the owner's father directly from the artist.

Arthur Reginald Smith A.R.A., R.W.S., R.S.W., was born in Skipton, Yorkshire and lived in Threshfield with his family. Smith displayed a keen interest in drawing from an early age and studied art at evening classes and sketched untiringly during his holidays. At 19 Smith was studying at Keighley school where his talents were recognised and rewarded with a working appointment within the school. He travelled on a scholarship to Italy and later worked at London schools teaching and running art classes at Leighton House.
He moved back to Yorkshire after the war where he spent the rest of his life. The Wharfedale Group emerged through his relationships with other artists including Reginald Brundrit, Frank Horne, Cutliffe Hyne and Halliwell Sutcliffe. Smith was a prolific exhibitor who regularly showed his paintings at The Fine Art Society and The Royal Watercolour Society.
