Footnotes

  • It was in 1967 that General Motors launched their entry into the pony car market which had been started by Ford’s Mustang. Similar to the GM Camaro, the Pontiac-branded Firebird was produced at the Chevrolet plant at Lordstown, Ohio, in hard-top coupe or convertible form on a 108ins wheelbase with identical engine options as the Tempest and GTO ranges, from a 3.8-litres six of 165bhp to a 325bhp V8 of 6.6-litres capacity. The 1969 model season saw the introduction of the Trans Am, a high performance Firebird named after the Trans Am stock car races. A Ram Air 111 335bhp V8 under-hood was standard as were a heavy-duty, three-speed manual gearbox with floor change, heavy duty springs and shox, disc brakes at the front and special stripes and decals identity. The model was restyled with a longer nose in 1970, by when a fully loaded Trans Am could reach 60mph in 5.5 seconds and do 135mph. The 1973 Firebirds were the first to sport on their bonnet tops huge fiery bird artwork by John Schinella and even more potent later models had 155mph capability.
This Firebird 6.6-litre Trans Am is one of the Limited Edition Run produced in 1979 in model-distinctive silver paintwork with special Firebird decals and silver leather with embroidered stitching specially produced to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Pontiac’s muscle car. The full options pack, consisting of power-steering, air-conditioning and removable T-Top glass panels, was factory-fitted. Appearing to be largely original, the left-hand drive coupe with auto-shift was first UK-registered in 1989 and the owner believes that the 27,500 mileage displayed to be the genuine total for the car from new. A copy invoice details work carried out to the brakes and exhaust earlier this year when the car was last MOT tested. One of the all-time classic Americans, and a seemingly unmolested example too, this celebratory Trans Am is ready to rumble.
