Footnotes

  • John Cooper had been selling his own modified Minis under the ‘Mini-Cooper’ name from the mid-1980s, before Rover’s acquisition of the rights to the brand made it possible to officially re-launch the model. As a prelude to series production, which commenced in September 1990, Rover’s Special Products (RSP) division built a limited run of cars in the summer of that year. More luxurious than the production version that followed, the ‘RSP’ or ‘Limited Edition’ Mini-Cooper was based on the Mini 30 and featured a striped bonnet, leather trim, red leather-bound steering wheel, wood dashboard and tinted glass, and was powered by the 1,275cc MG Metro engine. The Mini-Cooper’s revival after nearly 20 years out of production occasioned enormous interest and the Special Products-developed limited edition cars sold out immediately. Of the 1,650 RSP Mini-Coopers built, 600 were exported while the remaining 1,050 stayed in the UK. Today these RSP Limited Edition Mini-Coopers are among the most sought after of all Minis.
Number ‘695’ of the 1,650 produced, this RSP was supplied new via Charles Clarke in Wolverhampton and driven to its owner’s home, enjoying only two further outings (both within its first 12 months) before being garaged and covered. The car had recorded only 98 miles when it was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale in July of this year (Lot 602), but was immediately rejected by his wife after a drive of only two tenths of a mile – no power assisted steering!
Completely original and now with 98.2 miles recorded, this is as close to a brand new example as one could get. With 2009 being Mini's 50th Anniversary year, there can be no better time to acquire a collectible landmark model such as this. Presented in ‘as new’ condition in every department, the car is offered with old-style logbook, Swansea V5 registration document and MoT to July 2009. No reserve.
