Footnotes

  • The German Hanomag operation, best known in the 19th Century for manufacture of steam locomotives, moved to road vehicle manufacture in 1905, initially producing steam lorries but by the mid-1920’s offering a quirky two-seater private car powered by a single cylinder, rear-mounted 500cc engine. More conventional cars followed in the 1930’s and Hanomag captured the World Speed Record for a diesel-engined car in 1939 with their aerodynamic Rekord Diesel. Post World War II saw the company focusing on commercial vehicles and this Radio Command car was built for the German Government in 1961, the AL 28 being destined for Army, Navy, Air Force, police and Nato duties.

This vehicle saw service in West Berlin with the police on border guard duties. Only 500 or so of this model were built. It is powered by a four-cylinder, supercharged diesel engine of 2.8 litres and is four-wheel drive. Rated at 3 tons capacity, it is capable of a road speed of 55-60mph. Believed by the owner to be the only running example in the U.K., it has been used for nine years at shows, the owner having converted the rear quarters for camping accommodation. The vehicle is smartly presented in Field/Panzer grey livery and is described as in good running order. It is Swansea registered, licenced to June 2009 and is MoT exempt. What an excellent support vehicle for shooting parties on the North Yorkshire Moors.
