Footnotes

  • Roy Lane was a highly-regarded Warwickshire engineer who came to great prominence within the British sprint and hill-climb scene during the later 1960s. In 1968 he ran a gleaming orange Repco Brabham BT14 which he modified to accept a 3.5-litre Buick V8 engine. For 1969 he then built a development of this car using as its basis a Repco Brabham BT21 production Formula 3/Formula B chassis supplied brand-new from the triple-World Champion’s famous New Haw works adjacent to the Brooklands track in Surrey.

Hill-climb historian Chris Mason wrote in his superb book ‘Uphill Racers’ (Bookmarque Publishing, 1990, ISBN 1-870519-08-06) “Roy Lane showed off his spotless new TechCraft-Buick – Brabham BT21/28 based and with only two wheel drive after all – with a race win at Silverstone”. He then went on to star as one of the major protagonists in the annual RAC British Hill-Climb Championship, eventually achieving back-to-back Championship titles in 1975-76 driving a McRae-Chevrolet GM1.

We understand that this TechCraft-developed Brabham BT21 offered here was a Roy Lane car and converted by him and his TechCraft operation to accommodate the V8 Buick engine. It was acquired by the current owner in 2002 in the West Country, and was totally restored to high standards by Hansford Engineering for circuit racing within the Historic Sports Car Club’s popular Derek Bell Trophy competition from 2003 to 2006. The car has also been raced at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.

Modifications from original Brabham design centre upon the engine bay at the rear of the chassis frame which now – we are advised - houses a 430bhp 3.9-litre Buick V8 engine, driving to the rear wheels via a Hewland FG400 transaxle gearbox. The car has been maintained to “a prestige standard” for its present owner/vendor by Peter Burnand of the Grosvenor Garage company.

The car has benefited from a complete engine rebuild, while all steering, brakes, fuel and oil tanks and electrical wiring systems have been similarly serviced. The glassfibre bodywork is finished in green and gold – similar to the preferred livery of the Brabham Racing Organisation Formula 1 and Formula 2 teams themselves, and the condition of the engine is described by the vendor as “excellent – still running in”. This is a very interesting single-seater which would certainly reward any competent driver. It should be able to compete with heavier full 5-litre Formula 5000/Formula A cars of similar vintage, and it would offer a successful bidder some very enjoyable single-seater competition across a broad spectrum of events and venues.
