Footnotes

  • Ford created a new class of car almost overnight with the introduction of the Mustang sports coupé part way through the 1964 season, catching the rest of the US auto industry off guard. Aimed at the affluent young, for whom a car was as much a lifestyle statement as means of transport, the Mustang succeeded brilliantly, achieving sales in excess of a quarter million by the end of ’64. The secret of the Mustang’s success was a broad appeal that extended beyond the target market thanks to a great value-for-money package combining sporty looks, decent economy and brisk performance. Mustangs could be ordered in specifications ranging from six-cylinder ‘economy’ to V8-powered luxury, while customers could choose from an extensive range of factory options, with the result that seldom are two Mustangs identical.
This Ford Mustang Fastback Coupé was manufactured in November 1964, making it one of the very first completed in this particular body style. Imported into the UK in January 2006, the car has benefited from considerable work including all new front suspension (top and bottom ‘A’ arms, springs, bushes, etc) and all new brakes (drums, shoes, cylinders) while the automatic gearbox and torque converter were completely reconditioned by a specialist in August 2007. More recently, an American-car enthusiast has spent time sorting the Mustang, which is described as an extremely reliable and dependable classic, driving superbly with good oil pressure and smoke-free exhausts. Close inspection of the underside is recommended, as this example appears extremely original.
The car is finished in Rangoon Red with matching ‘Pony’ interior, Mustang over-mats, ‘Humphugger’ centre console, fold-down rear seats and trunk access flap, the latter a rarely seen option. Other noteworthy features include an Edelbrock carburettor and inlet manifold; eight-branch tubular extraction exhaust manifold; chromed wheels; narrow band whitewall tyres; and ‘vintage’-style stainless-steel dash panel. ‘ECD 557C’ is supplied with American history, current MoT/road fund licence, Swansea V5 document and sundry invoices totalling over £5,000 for the detailed works carried out in the UK since 2006.
