1965 Mallock MK5B Clubman's Formula Car
This Clubman’s Formula car is one of the highly successful ‘U2’ series developed and manufactured over many years by Arthur Mallock - ‘U2 can also be a racing driver.’ An engineer and former Army Officer, Arthur Mallock built the original U2 in 1958, having already cut his motor sporting teeth on an Austin Seven special, and this simple front-engined design would set the pattern for all that followed. By getting the basics right – chassis stiffness, weight distribution, spring rates, etc – Mallock produced cars that not only dominated Clubman’s Formula racing but also gave a good account of themselves at international level in Formula 2 and Formula 3 when pitted against the theoretically more advanced, mid-engined opposition. Arthur’s sons Richard and Ray Mallock both raced U2s with considerable success, Richard later concentrating on the family business of manufacturing racing cars, while the Ray set up his own specialist motor sport company, Ray Mallock Limited (RML). Mallock cars are still produced today, this famous line having reached Mk35, and this year the firm celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The car offered here is one of approximately five Mallock Mk5s built for Clubman’s Formula racing in 1965. The Mk5 was a development of the Mk3, which was the first to combine cross-over, swing-axle IFS and a coil-sprung back axle. Unused for some 20 years, this wonderfully original and unspoilt example is fitted with a rebuilt (in 1994) Ford 1,600cc (pre-crossflow) engine breathing via twin 40DCOE Webers. Featuring Ford running gear, a BMC back axle, drum brakes all round and modified rear bodywork the car should only require relatively straightforward re-commissioning to bring it back to life.
