Footnotes

  • When Fiat launched the 500 in 1936, it was the best small car in the world, bar none. It has been described as one of the two most significant small cars of the inter-war period, the other being the Austin Seven. It won so many hearts that it was soon nicknamed ‘Topolino’, which translates literally as ‘little mouse’. A literal translation does not, however, convey the affection behind the nickname. In Italy, Mickey Mouse is known as ‘Topolino’. It even became a rite of passage for many a young blood to enter his Topolino in the Mille Miglia.
The 500C, produced from 1949 to 1954, is generally rated as the best of the Topolino line. Its engine had a new overhead valve cylinder head and so 60mph (100km/h) was possible, while there were few more economical cars made anywhere. Moreover, unlike most small cars of the period, it was fun to drive.
This particular example was purchased by the immediately preceding owner at Brooks’ Sale at the Nurburgring in 2000 (Lot 141) and has been used as paddock transport for recent Goodwood Revival meetings. Previously Italian registered, the car was restored by Storicar in Brescia, is finished in fawn with a tan cloth interior and has a full-length sunroof. ‘XSL 465’ was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival Sale in 2005 (Lot 101) and since acquisition has benefited from a re-spray and many new parts. Described by the private vendor as in good condition throughout, the car is offered with sundry restoration invoices, current road fund licence, MoT to February 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
The Topolino is one of the very few cars to have been so loved as to have been given a nickname that became universal. To drive one is to know why.
