Footnotes

  • In post-war years GN Ltd moved to the factory previously occupied by Gregoire on East Hill in Wandsworth, allowing production to be stepped up. At that stage the original ash chassis used in the pre-war cars gave way to steel chassis and the primitive wire and bobbin steering was replaced by a conventional steering box. The belt and chain transmission of the early cars was replaced by chain drive throughout, the differential-less rear axle making these cars particularly suitable for trials use. Lightweight two-seater coachwork was the norm, with an ash frame panelled in aluminium. The Popular model weighed in at just 6 1/2 cwt and the V-twin engine gave remarkable power and torque. Sporting models included the Légère and the top-of-the-range Vitesse with a 1,086cc, air-cooled, V-twin engine, featuring enclosed overhead camshafts. It is thought that only 35 or so of these high-revving and seriously quick Vitesses were built.

Little is known of the precise history of GN 1922 although it is recorded as long ago as 1946 as being in the ownership of Stafford East at his Winterbourne garage in Townsend Road in Chesham. The buff log book dating from 25th July 1946 shows the index mark then of JBH 94, the car having been re-registered post-war, a note on the buff log book indicating ‘previous mark and number untraceable’. The colour at that time is recorded as grey. The car was licenced in 1946 and again in 1949, presumably qualifying it for valuable petrol coupons. In 1961 Stafford’s late wife Mavis bought for him the registration number GN 1922 for this car. MoT test certificates suggest continued use in 1962, 1963 and 1964.

This highly desirable and rare voiturette is presented in dark blue livery with brown leather upholstery and is equipped with a Watford 0-100mph speedometer, combined amperes meter, volt meter and ignition switch and is equipped with Smiths sidelamps, a Smiths centre-mounted headlamp, diver’s helmet rear lamps, near-side mounted spare wheel and folding windscreen. GN 1922 has not seen active use in recent years, and presents itself as a straightforward restoration project needing mechanical and cosmetic recommissioning. It is offered with old style buff log book from 1946, a Swansea V5 registration document and expired MoT certificates.
