Footnotes

  • Launched to much acclaim in 1968, the XJ6 refined concepts embodied by previous Jaguar saloons to create a car to rival the best offered by Mercedes-Benz. ‘Not only is the XJ6 far and away the best saloon that Jaguar have ever made but we believe that in its behaviour it gets closer to overall perfection than any other luxury car we have tested, regardless of price’ was Motor magazine’s summation of the Coventry firm’s new flagship.
The six-cylinder XK engine was available in either 2.8-litre or 4.2-litre forms initially, the latter capable of propelling Jaguar’s - and Daimler’s - luxuriously appointed flagship to a top speed of 120mph-plus. The 'Sovereign' version took its name from the range-topping Daimler variant and came with just about every conceivable optional extra incorporated as standard. A longer - by 4" - wheelbase version of the XJ6 was introduced in August 1972, becoming the standard bodyshell when the model was upgraded to Series II specification the following year. With its restyled cabin, courtesy of Pininfarina, the Series III of 1979 was readily distinguishable from the Series I/II, while beneath the skin the 4.2-litre engine gained Bosch electronic fuel injection for improved economy.
This Series III XJ6 was sold new to Watford Football Club on 1st August 1985, being chauffeur driven for the first two years of its life and serviced by Merritts of Amersham and then by Mann Egerton. The car has been in the current (lady) owner’s hands since May 1990 and has been maintained regardless of cost. Kept garaged and not used in the rain since 1995, it is only offered for sale because of a sudden bereavement, which has caused a planned bodywork refurbishment to be cancelled. ‘C267 TLB’ is entered on the Jaguar Drivers Club Register and comes with extensive history and service records. Finished in Cranberry with tan leather interior, the car has automatic transmission and is offered with MoT to 21st October 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document. A stainless-steel exhaust system and halogen headlamp conversion are the only listed deviations from factory specification.
