Footnotes

  • Jaguar had tinkered with the design of its highly successful XJ6 saloon before, most notably with the introduction of the Pininfarina-restyled Series III, but in 1986 grasped the nettle bravely with the launch of an entirely new version - code-named ‘XJ40’. The new XJ’s outward similarity to the old one masked a host of improvements: a simpler bodyshell constructed from fewer panels, new advanced anti-corrosion technology, increased passenger and luggage space, and revised suspension giving superior ride and handling There were also two new six-cylinder engines replacing the long-running XK series: the 3.6-litre, 24valve, twin-cam AJ6 already seen in the XJ-S and a 2.9-litre single-cam unit - effectively half of the existing V12. In September 1989 a new 4.0-litre version of the AJ6 24-valve six was launched. Delivering greater power and torque than the old 3.6-litre, the new unit was linked to the latest four-speed ‘dual-mode’ automatic transmission from ZF. At the same time, the dashboard instruments returned to a more traditional form and the indicator stalk became conventional in operation, while outwardly the only change was to the trim surrounding the rear lights. As usual, the Sovereign version came with all options, including anti-lock brakes, as standard.
Autocar reckoned its Sovereign test car was the best XJ6 yet, finding that the new engine was ‘now notably smoother and quieter in the mid-range and virtually inaudible at motorway speeds.’ The respected motoring magazine returned performance figures of 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 140mph, bettering the opposition from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
This well preserved 4.0-litre Sovereign has enjoyed only three owners and covered a mere 45,300-or-so miles from new. The car comes fully equipped with air conditioning; cruise control; electric seats, mirrors and windows; original car ’phone (to be reconnected); alarm/immobiliser; Jaguar radio/cassette player; window security etchings; and full tool kit. Finished in green with beige leather interior, this superb modern Jaguar is offered with service history (including invoices); a quantity of expired MoT certificates, old tax discs and other documents; road fund licence to 31st December 2008; MoT to 19th December 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
