Footnotes

  • Finished in Signal Red with sand full leather interior, this Excel benefits from the improved quality standards instigated by Lotus in 1986. ‘D818 JHV’ is an SE model fitted with the 180bhp engine, which is distinguished from the standard (160bhp) version by its red cam covers. Last of the front-engined Lotus GT cars, the Excel is a genuine ‘2+2’ with comfortable rear seats - suitable even for adults - and boasts a boot large enough for golf clubs and luggage. An integral roll cage and steel door beams combine with the impact resistant, composite bodyshell and galvanised steel backbone chassis to make for a rust-free and safe vehicle. This particular version was developed when Lotus was part-owned by Toyota and so benefits from the Supra’s robust five-speed gearbox, drive-train and electrics, plus quality VDO instrumentation, endowing the car with superb reliability. Of growing classic status, the Excel is not a fussy, fragile classic requiring mollycoddling, but a cleverly engineered and highly usable driver's car that can be enjoyed together with children and family.
This Excel was first registered with diplomatic plates (‘118D385’) on 26th February 1987 to a Mr J G M Porto c/o the Brazilian Embassy. Subsequently Mr Porto paid all taxes and the car was reregistered ‘D818 JHV’ on 9th December 1988. The vendor - only its second owner - purchased the Lotus on 31st March 1989 from Mann Egerton, of Dover Street, London W1, its original supplier, which had maintained the car from new. Since acquisition the Excel has been serviced at recommended schedules by Lotus specialist, Moreland Jones and comes with full service/maintenance history from new. The current recorded mileage is 101,600. Spare parts are readily available and the car’s straightforward construction makes it easy to maintain. We are advised that the unleaded-compatible engine was fully rebuilt at 65,000 miles in 1996 and the cam belts last replaced at 93,447 miles in March 2003. Mechanicals, running gear and electrics are reported in full working order, while the paintwork, body and interior are all described as in excellent condition. Front brake calipers, discs and pads were renewed recently and the suspension overhauled. Other noteworthy features include a stainless-steel exhaust system; Kenwood CD stereo; Clifford alarm/immobiliser; occasional child’s rear seat with lap belt; and four new Dunlop SP9000 tyres. The original toolkit and (good condition) alloy spare wheel come with the car. MoT’d to 18th May 2009 and offered with Swansea V5, ‘D818 JHV’ represents an opportunity to acquire a modern classic that is fun to drive and relatively inexpensive to run while being both distinctive and attention getting.
