Footnotes

  • For many enthusiasts the most iconic endurance racing car design in their sporting life has been the sleek and graceful Porsche 956/962 series from the mid-1980s. There is a very active and growing constituency within Historic and Vintage racing worldwide for these increasingly highly
regarded cars from the Group C era of the 1980s and into the early 1990s. Here we are delighted to be able to offer this beautifully restored, rebuilt and very special 2.8 litre twin-turbo engined variant of the iconic Porsche Type 956 design.

It is actually the Richard Lloyd Racing team car which as original finished second overall at Le Mans in 1985, co-driven by Jonathan Palmer, James Weaver and Richard Lloyd. The car then achieved that tremendous result while finishing very strongly behind the victorious semi-works Joest team Porsche 956, only missing possible victory after an unscheduled pit stop caused by, as it transpired, a faulty £2 water temperature sensor...
The car went on – after a comprehensive rebuild following an accident at Spa in which its super-strong aluminium-honeycomb chassis structure saved driver Jonathan Palmer from worse injuries than he in fact sustained (following a front tyre deflation on the fastest part of the daunting Belgian circuit) – to win the Brands Hatch 1,000Kms classic in 1985 co-driven by the late Bob Wollek and Mauro Baldi. The Richard Lloyd team also achieved one second place, one fourth and one fifth place at major-league International level with this car – chassis serial ‘106B’.

It was in 1984 that Richard Lloyd commissioned experienced design
engineer Nigel Stroud to redesign the standard conventional Porsche 956 chassis as supplied by the German factory. Following extensive in-house torsional rigidity tests of the basic sheet-alloy chassis it was decided to construct a replacement RLR design fabricated and skinned in ultra-stiff yet lightweight aluminium-honeycomb material, wherever practical.
Nigel Stroud also redesigned the front suspension to incorporate rising-rate springing with a more effective front anti-roll bar and steering rack installation. What emerged in the RLR workshops was a brand-new Porsche 956 monocoque chassis which was torsionally stiffer than the factory’s design and which was also endowed with greatly enhanced front and side-impact protection. It also featured a more simple and practical front suspension system.

RLR pioneered and developed completely redesigned front hub-cum-upright assemblies carrying single brake calipers perfected in conjunction with AP Racing. The original twin-caliper system could also be fitted should it
    be required.
This practical interchangeability demonstrated the depth of thinking and experience embodied within Richard Lloyd Racing. The package included many other detail improvements and the finished car set new innovation standards within World Sportscar Championship racing. The Stroud design was subsequently adapted slightly to accommodate the FIA’s eventual footbox ruling which resulted in the Porsche 962 version being created.

In 1984-85, the RLR team retained its original Porsche 956 chasiss number ‘106’ and at Jurgen Barth’s suggestion – as factory Porsche racing manager – it was decided to number the new chassis ‘106B’. Jurgen Barth subsequently decided and requested that all subsequent RLR chassis should become known as the ‘200’ series – thus ‘RLR 962/200’.

This particular car in its original Stroud-chassised form made its racing debut at Spa in 1984. It immediately proved to have tremendous
potential and was very quick, but it failed in the race when the increased loadings generated by the new chassis broke its standard Porsche rear suspension beam.

Other outings for the car were as follows:

Fuji 1000Kms (Palmer/Jan Lammers) 9th – Sandown Park, Australia 1000Kms (Palmer/Lammers) q.3, Rtd – then into 1985 Mugello 1000Kms – Monza 1000Kms q.3, Rtd – and Silverstone 1000Kms q.5 9th. It then went to Le Mans where it achieved that magnificent second place finish, before within weeks being heavily damaged in Jonathan Palmer’s unfortunate crash at Spa following the tyre deflation. The fact the British driver emerged with only a broken leg was credited very much to the astounding strength and ‘crash-worthiness’ of the RLR/Nigel Stroud honeycomb chasiss.

The car was completely rebuilt and ran eleven more races, including the great Brands Hatch victory for Bob Wollek/Mauro Baldi at Brands Hatch. The car was by that time finished in ‘Liqui-Moly’ sponsorship livery. At Brands Hatch the team again broke new ground by running an additional front wing and two-piece carbon rear wing.
