Footnotes

  • A ‘modern classic’ if ever there was one, Porsche’s long-running 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the ‘901’, but had become the ‘911’ by the time production proper commenced in 1964 following Peugeot’s complaints about the use of ‘0’ model numbers. Representing a major step forward, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 versions - coded named ‘964’ - were launched in 1989, the former marking the first time that four-wheel drive had been seen on a series-production 911. Porsche had experimented with four-wheel drive on the 959 supercar, and many of the lessons learned from the latter influenced the design of the 964’s chassis and suspension. Face-lifted but retaining that familiar shape, the newcomers had been given a more extensive work-over mechanically, 87% of parts being claimed as entirely new. The pair shared the same 3.6-litre, 247bhp, flat-six engine while power-assisted steering (another 911 ‘first’), anti-lock brakes and a five-speed manual transmission were standard on both, with the Tiptronic auto ’box a Carrera 2-only option. Its new Type M64 engine enabled the 964 to out-perform the old ‘3.2’ yet still met the latest emissions regulations, top speed increasing to 162mph with 60mph attainable in 5.4 seconds (5.6 seconds Tiptronic).
Celebrating 30 years since the model’s first appearance as the ‘901’, Porsche built 911 limited edition Carrera 4 Celebration models, 50 being right-hand drive, only 41 of which were destined for the UK of which only 12 were painted silver. The main distinguishing feature of this special 911 was its Turbo bodyshell, also used by the Turbo-Look models, although the Celebration’s specification did not include the latter’s Turbo brakes and suspension. This right-hand drive example has enjoyed only three owners from new and was acquired by the vendor in 2007 having been in the immediately preceding ownership since 2000. The car comes with its service booklet recording full servicing by official Porsche agents AFN Reading from 1994 to 1998 and Hillcrest Porsche from 2000 to 2005. Little used over the past three years, ‘L602 RVX’ has covered some 125,000-or-so miles from new and is presented in good condition throughout. The vehicle is offered with the aforementioned service history, instruction manual, old-style logbook, MoT to August 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
