Footnotes

  • The September 1926 launched Singer Junior was to become one of the Coventry firm’s most successful models. The single overhead camshaft, four-cylinder, 848cc engine (16.5hp at 3250rpm) - a design subsequently employed by the marque for their successful trials and Le Mans sport scars in the 1930s - was the forerunner of a long line of ohc engines which were produced until the Rootes Group takeover put Hillman Minx engines under Singer bonnets.

Capable of up to 46mpg and costing £129, a Junior represented excellent value for money, so much so that the majority of the 100 cars a day that Singer were producing in 1929 were Juniors, securing them third place among British motor manufacturers only being beaten by Morris and Austin. Gaining 4-wheel brakes in 1928 and wire wheels in 1930, the Junior proved popular in the status conscious Doctor and Bank Manager sector.

Well preserved by spending thirty years in the Sharp Collection, this Singer Saloon was completed on the 23rd of June 1930. Both chassis and body number plates are displayed on the bulkhead and manufacturing details and current registration appear in the V5C. Refurbished in recent years, the 4-door bodywork has been painted dark green over black and the interior trimmed in black leather and green suede. Period-correct Rotax instrument panel and side lights and Desmo headlamps, all in brass, are fitted. The vendor tells us that the engine starts and runs well and the 3-speed and reverse gearbox functions correctly, and that the car will have been MOT Tested by sale day.
