Footnotes

  • Founded by the four Walklett brothers, who owned and ran an agricultural engineering business in Woodbridge, Suffolk, Ginetta offered its first (kit-form) sports car in 1957 - the G2 - which followed Ivor Walklett’s Wolseley Hornet-based ‘G1’ special. Unlike many of its long-forgotten contemporaries, the company prospered and is still active today under new ownership, the Walkletts having sold up in 1989. The Walkletts were motor racing enthusiasts, and many of the firm’s products were built exclusively for competition purposes. The Ford-engined G4 series of the 1960s was Ginetta’s first volume-production model, sales being boosted by the many race victories of the G4R version. Although various single-seater designs were developed, most notably the G18 and G19 Formula Fords, the company’s forte has always been sports cars. There have been numerous designs over the years, the current line-up consisting of the G20 in various guises and the G50, both of which enjoy dedicated one-make championships.
The car we offer is an example of one of Ginetta’s rarer models – the G22 – which was originally developed for the Sports 2000 motor racing formula in the 1970s. Ginetta extensively tested the first G22 in the late 1970s and two further chassis were constructed, that offered here being one of them. This car was bought and built up by John Knapton, who installed a Cosworth BDA engine and used it for sprints and hill-climbs as did subsequent owner Denis Downey, who fitted a 1,700cc Ford cross-flow engine in place of the BDA. The current owner purchased the car from Denis Downey in 1986 and kept it in storage until restoration commenced in 2005. This extensive refurbishment included removing the extended wheelarches, restoring the body and fitting correct-size wheels and tyres in accordance with Sports 2000 regulations. A 1.6-litre Ford cross-flow engine is currently installed, dry sumped and fitted with twin Weber 40DCOE carburettors, while the gearbox is a four-speed Hewland Mk9. Since completion in 2007 the car has been tested twice and comes with two sets of wheels shod with wet/dry Yokohama tyres. A rare model from one of Britain’s foremost independent constructors, this car could be used ‘as is’ for hill climbs and sprints, or fitted with a Ford Pinto engine and raced in the new ‘historic’ category of the Sports 2000 Championship.
