1999 Egli-Vincent 998cc
Registration no. 773 XMP
Frame no. ADM 1000
Engine no. F10AB/1/1863
One of the world’s best known motorcycle frame makers, Swiss engineer Fritz Egli built his first frame in what would turn out to be a highly successful attempt to tame the wayward handling of his Vincent v-win racer. The Vincent used a spine-type frame and so did Egli, though his was tubular rather than box-section and all-welded rather than bolt-up in construction. This trademark large-diameter spine has been a feature of virtually all Egli’s frames made since, proving adaptable to almost all types of motorcycle engine layout from British singles to across-the-frame Japanese fours. These days widely regarded as a marque in its own right, it is the Egli-Vincent v-twin, with its exciting combination of classic power and modern chassis technology, that has proved to be his most enduring legacy.

As Fritz Egli moved on to other projects, the machines continued to be produced in limited numbers by other specialists. Commissioned by the immediately preceding owner and assembled by professional restorer John Mossey, this example was completed in 1999 using a replica of the Egli frame manufactured by Competition Fabrications of Attleborough, Norfolk and a genuine Vincent Rapide engine, number ‘F10AB/1/1836’. The latter has been authenticated by the Vincent Owners Club as having originated in a Series-B Rapide delivered on 28th March 1949 to Millers in Mitcham. Factory records show that the Rapide had been road tested by none other than the legendary George Brown himself (of Nero, Super Nero and Gungadin fame) on 11th March 1949. The Egli was purchased by the current owner at Bonhams’ Stafford Sale on 27th March 2003 (Lot 423).

The Mossey Engineering restoration is well documented and included Triumph T140 forks, wheels and disc brakes; Spondon adjustable yokes; 32mm Amal Concentric Mk2 carburetors; modified (Suzuki) clutch and Lucas RITA ignition. Subsequently a Podtronics regulator, Paul Dunn dynamo and halogen lighting have been fitted. The machine has completed several demonstration laps of the Isle of Man TT course by invitation of the VMCC, which displayed it at their Golden Jubilee Rally and also featured it as a calendar bike. The photograph used was sold worldwide as a limited edition print, making this one of the best-known of Egli-Vincents. It has also been featured in Classic Bike Guide (March 2005 issue) having taken part in a re-enactment of Vincent-mounted journalist Cyril Quantrill’s 1952 ride to the summit of the Ballon d’Alsace in France (copy available). Presented in good condition throughout, this most desirable of superbike ‘specials’ is offered with restoration invoices, copy Vincent factory records, starting instructions, VOC dating certificate, current MoT and Swansea V5C registration document.
