c.1930 Cotton-Panther Dirt-Track Racing Motorcycle
Engine no. 060575
Machines designed specifically for speedway - or ‘dirt-track’ - racing evolved rapidly following the sport’s introduction to the UK in 1928. Almost every major manufacturer listed a speedway model at some time during the late 1920s/early 1930s, with first Douglas and then Rudge claiming supremacy on the track. With the introduction of the JAP speedway engine in 1930, the sport’s nature changed radically, and from then onwards speedway racing would be the exclusive preserve of the specialist frame maker. There were, of course, numerous hybrids and home-built ‘specials’ constructed as riders sought the ultimate combination of user-friendly power and secure handling. The Cotton frame, with its unusual layout of straight tubes running from steering head to rear wheel spindle, was widely recognised as one of the best around, which is no doubt why it was chosen by the builder of this fascinating dirt-track ‘special’. Its Panther engine is not one normally associated with competition use, although the firm did build a small number of special dirt-track bikes in the late 1920s. It is not known who built this particular machine, which has been in the vendor’s possession for a little over two years having been in storage for the preceding five. Restored and presented in good condition throughout - and almost certainly unique - it is ideally suited to VMCC dirt-track demonstrations and other similar events.
