1929 Velocette 249cc Model U
Registration no. UW 5911
Frame no. U2172
Engine no. UB1962
The first machine to bear the name ‘Velocette’ was a two-stroke, so called to differentiate it from the larger, four-stroke Veloce model, and the type was an almost permanent fixture of the Hall Green range up until WW2. Although dropped at the end of 1926, the two-stroke Velocette reappeared at the 1927 Motor Cycle Show as the heavily revised Model U (for ‘Utility) boasting improved brakes, lightweight Webb forks and the newly fashionable ‘saddle’ tank. Its predecessor’s 63x80mm bore/stroke dimensions were retained, but the twin-port motor now had a roller big-end bearing and drove via a three-speed, hand change gearbox. Well engineered in the best Veloce tradition, the Model U quickly gained a reputation for exemplary reliability and was soon joined by a USS sports version with detachable cylinder head. Purchased by its late owner in 1968 from a Mr J M Carnall, of London SE4, this Model U was last MoT’d in 1971 and comes with the relevant certificate. Kept in storage ever since, the machine will require re-commissioning and the customary safety checks before returning to the road. It is offered with 1968 bill of sale, old-style continuation logbook (issued 1967) and Swansea V5 registration document.

Saleroom notices

  • Since going to press, Bonhams’ consultant, VMCC Velocette marque specialist and all-round motorcycling authority, Jeff Clew has told us that he once owned this 1929 Velocette Model U. ‘I can clearly remember buying it for £25 from a motorcycle dealer operating from a bomb site in Loughborough Junction,’ says Jeff. ‘A rare machine even then, it was remarkably close to its original specification and I was able to ride it home the following weekend. ‘It has quite a history as Audrey (my wife) learnt to ride on it, and we used it to take part in many VMCC events held in Surrey during the ’50s. At one time I converted it temporarily to a trials ‘special’ by fitting a 1924 Model AC single exhaust port engine and an upswept exhaust system I designed myself, to give six inches ground clearance. Audrey rode it in VMCC trials, and we lent it to a friend who subsequently won the Holtye Trial on it. ‘It ran exceptionally well and you will find a photo of both of us with it on page 36 of the Velocette history Always In The Picture by Bob Burgess and myself, and on page 64 of Titch Allen’s The Velocette Saga. We had just ascended the steep hill leading to Newlands Corner for a Sunbeam MCC Rally, two up, staying in top gear all the way! I kept all the original bits and converted it back to its original specification before I sold it in the late ’50s to Jim Carnall (mentioned in the catalogue description).’
