The inverted bell top surmounted by a handle over a moulded cornice, shaped side apertures with later brass frets on a moulded base with turned brass feet, the four inch arched brass dial with rise and fall subsidiary dial above XII flanked by pierced spandrels and a strike/silent lever, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with lozenge shaped half-quarter marks and chamfered inner edge to the matted centre with signed mock pendulum aperture and square date aperture, the twin gut fusee movement with five knopped pillars (the central pillar latched to the frontplate), with verge escapement rack striking the hour on the hour and repeating the quarters on a nest of six hammers and bells, the backplate with stylised wheat ear border enclosing a pair of winged heralds within flowing foliate scrolls, the pendulum bob further engraved with a flowerhead 33cm (13in) high.

  • It is interesting to note that the frontplate is stamped IP for John Purden. It would seem that Purden specialised in clocks of particularly small proportions - another by him was sold in these rooms on 11th December 2007.
