London, New Bond Street

A good early 18th century burr walnut longcase clock
Windmills, London
The hood with stepped caddy top and twin ball finials over a pierced cresting and three-quarter brass-capped Corinthian columns, the long rectangular trunk door with half-round moulded edge, central glazed lenticle and bookmatched panels of veneer, on a well figured base and shaped apron, the 12 inch arched brass dial with a strongly engraved wheat ear border and set to the arch with a subsidiary date dial with starburst centre and single hand flanked by cast addorsed dolphins, the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half-quarter lozenge markers enclosing the finely matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial, signed low on the chapter ring between V and VII, the movement with five knopped and finned pillars, with anchor escapement rack striking on a bell 2.46m (8ft 1in) high.

Footnotes

  • The subsidiary date dial is an enduring motif of the Windmills workshop. It can be found on their bracket and longcase clocks and takes suprisingly many forms, with the very best examples - such as that found on the current clock - having twelve points on a matted centre with a fully engraved centre section.

Saleroom notices
