oil on canvas
59.7 x 47.2cm (23 1/2 x 18 9/16in).

Footnotes

  • The present canvas represents the voluptuous female form for which Pignoni is best known, in which he developed the sensual style of his fellow Florentine, Francesco Furini. It was said that he was nearly ruined as a result of the huge sums he spent in order to obtain the most beautiful models and his fascination with this subject is evident from his self-portrait in the Uffizi, in which he depicts himself building up a rounded female form from a skeleton.
