Footnotes

  • Eduardo de Martino, C.V.O., attended the Naval Academy in Naples, and was navigating officer on the corvette Ercole in South America when he resigned his commission. He settled in Montevideo, Uruguay, and later in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In 1875 he moved to England, where he became a close friend of the Prince of Wales; in 1894, Queen Victoria appointed him Marine Painter-in-Ordinary.

    The above lot was the artist’s sketchbook while on board the Ercole and is inscribed ‘E de Martino/uffiziale sulla ***/Corvette/'Ercole'/Montevideo 15 Marzo 66/Viaggo al Pacifico passando/per lo stretto di Magellano' (E. de Martino, Officer on the corvette ‘Ecole’, Montevideo 15 March ’66. Journey to the Pacific, passing through the Straits of Magellan). It features sketches in watercolour, pencil, pen and ink recording the journey through Straits of Magellan, as well as views of the Falklands, Uruguay and Brazil, character studies, photographs and journal entries.
