Footnotes

  • The present lot was painted in 1877 by the portrait painter Frederick William Lock who exhibited at the Royal Academy 1845-1871. It is clearly after an earlier miniature by John Smart, although it is interesting to note from the inscription that despite Smart's fame, at the time of copying, the authorship of the prototype was not recognised.

Claude Russell lived at Binfield Manor House and was married to Leonora, daughter of Lord Pigot.
