An important gold lacquer saya inro
By Kayo Renka, 19th Century
The kinji sheath inlaid with a samurai helmet, its bowl decorated with large hollyhock leaves and with gold aoi crests on the fukikaeshi and band above the shikoro, reversed by further inlay of a blossoming prunus branch behind a large battle fan centered by a sun alluding to the Minamoto archer Nasu no Yoichi and rendered in iroe takamakie, gold, mother-of-pearl and shakudo takazogan, the enclosed four-case inro embellished on either side with two large aoi mon in togidashi on a dense nashiji ground, the interior of nashiji, signed Kayo Renka kore [o] tsukuru (made by Renka of Kaga Province); with a stained ivory ojime shaped as a miniature drum, with black lacquered tomoe to the sides and silver bosses, and a wood netsuke fashioned as a samurai helmet resting on a weathered wooden plaque carved to the reverse with an imperial decree dated Ten'en second year (=974).
