The Ducati TT2 was the factory’s official return to competition since 1975. A completely new, extremely light space frame designed by Taglioni was introduced as well. The frame was very compact and strong and had a relatively short wheelbase of only 55 inches. The motorcycle was fitted with 35mm Marzocchi racing forks with magnesium alloy sliders and 280mm Brembo front discs. Campagnolo ultra-light 18” alloy wheels kept overall weight to a mimimum. The rear suspension was updated to a Marzocci PVS 1 remote reservoir gas shock, an improvement over the Paoli suspension of the previous year.

In 1982 the Ducati factory supported both the Italian and the world championship series. Walter Cussigh won every round of the Italian TT2 championship riding a TT2. 40 year old Tony Rutter was contracted to ride the factory TT2s in the three world rounds of that year’s series. Rutter succeeded in winning all three races. At the Isle of Man, Rutter was considerably faster than the previous year and he won the Forumla 2 race on the factory bike with an average speed of 108.50mph. His own lap record speed of 109.27mph was a remarkable feat for a production-based four-stroke twin.

The TT2 was an extremely effective racing machine. Also during 1982, a limited number of production TT2 replicas were built for privateers. The motorcycle featured here is one of twenty factory racers and one of two imported to Japan. It has an extensive race history in Japan as well.
