2002 Ural Tourist
Frame no. 1C93764A921208853
The original Ural motorcycle was developed during WWII as Russia was preparing for a possible attack by Nazi Germany. At the time, Russia’s technology was outdated and production quality was poor. They needed a motorcycle that could withstand the harsh Russian climate and terrain.

After considerable research, it was determined that the BMW R71 most closely matched the Red Army’s requirements. Five of these motorcycles were bought covertly, were dismantled and reverse engineered in every detail. In 1942, the first batch of motorcycles was sent to the front. Production continued and expanded after the war and, in 1950, the 30,000th motorcycle left the plant.

Up until the late 50s, Urals were strictly military motorcycles however, by the early 70s, Urals were being exported to developing nations around the world. Since the motorcycles and sidecars were designed for rough Russian roads, Urals are quite robust. They are equipped with four-stroke, flat-twin, air cooled engines, a four speed gearbox (with reverse!) and drum brakes.

The company manufactures their own frame, engine and transmission, body parts and wheels, but, like most modern bikes, parts are sourced from other manufacturers. Forks are Paoli, ignitions are from Ducati and brakes are from Brembo.

In 1998, the company was bought by private interests and was no longer a State Company. The new owners invested in new designs, modern production techniques, management and quality control throughout the entire manufacturing process. Modern Ural motorcycles are stout, well-built motorcycles capable of comfortable, long-distance rides.

The motorcycle featured here was originally owned by musician Billy Joel and is signed on the gas tank by The Piano Man himself. Initially sold Mr Joel by Lighthouse Harley-Davidson in Huntington Point, New York with a sidecar, as most Urals are equipped, Billy kept the sidecar for his personal collection when he sold the bike back to Lighthouse. Since the bike was originally setup to be ridden with a sidecar attached, the next owner is advised to either change the front end or reattach a Ural sidecar (both of which can easily be accomplished).

One would be under pressure to find a better bike with which to go to an Italian restaurant with an uptown girl.
