[CIVIL WAR—CONFEDERATE LETTERS.]
2 Autograph Letters Signed (“Louisa King”), 4 pp recto and verso, folio and 8vo, South Ivey, May 9, 1861 and August 9, 1864, earlier letter expressing outrage at the coming war, both leaves creased, age-toned, stained, both with some separation at folds.

An interesting set of letters from a Southern wife to her friends. From May 9, 1861: “Oh what a curse those hypocritical religionists, so consciences they don’t want to allow us slaves when they can keep poor white people working and starving round them and never feel that’s any sin. They first had the slaves and kept them until they were so little service to them the brought them south and sold them here now they want them freed why did they not free them? That’s only a pretence we Southerners have ruind them every thing nice must come from the North. Teacher’s fine dresses all must come from the North they thought we looked to them so much they could take our property and we submit but I tell you Southerners when roused is hard to conquor we may have some hard battles but I trust the Lord will fight our battles for I think we are in the right.”
