Footnotes

  • Van Baurscheit was born near Bonn in 1669, and apprenticed to Pieter Scheemakers in Antwerp. Enrolled as a master in the Guild of St Luke in 1694/5, he specialised in grand tombs, and was appointed Sculptor and Architect to the Emperor in 1723.

The unusual motif of crying suggests that this may once have been paired with a bust of a laughing child, so as to make a humorous reference to the ancient Greek philosophers Heraclitus and Democlitus. Several such pairs of busts of children are known in the Dutch tradition.
