Footnotes

  • John Henry Foley was the first major figure in Irish sculpture and became one of the most renowned mid Victorian sculptors in Britain. Born in Dublin, the son of a grocer he showed an aptitude for drawing at an early age and attended the Royal Dublin Society Art Schools. He moved to London and was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1835. He exhibited there from 1839 and his first success came with his work "Death of Abdel" exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840. He received many public commissions for statues of historical and contemporary political figures as well as commissions for bust portraiture of society figures. Amongst his works is the statue of John Hampden at the Palace of Westminster in 1844 and the equestrian monument to Viscount Hardinge in Calcutta in 1858. He is probably best known for his statue of the seated figure of Prince Consort on the Albert Memorial.
